Itinerary

Arrive to Thargomindah

Arrive at Thargomindah and meet your mates for the week. Enjoy a country pub meal and a few cold ales. Not too many though as it’s going to be an early start.

Thargomindah to Private Property Location Camping Under the Stars (Approx 220km)

A great introduction to Outback Australia. Old shearing sheds, rocky escarpments, the iconic dog fence, and red sand dunes just to name a few. We cross through private properties including historic stations such as Norley, Orient & Mt Margaret. We will set up camp at a private property location for the night where we will saddle up to some homestyle camp oven cooking!

The Noccundra Hotel

Private Property to Bulloo Downs (180km Approx)

Next, we will ride through the iconic stations such as Bulloo Downs Station in the footsteps of Burke and Wills and through an ever-changing landscape. Discover the final resting place of members of the Burke & Wills expedition, traveling along a track that very few have ventured. We will rest in the afternoon with a cold beverage on the banks of the mighty Bulloo River and maybe catch a blue claw or two for entree.

Banks of the Bulloo River to The Royal Mail Hotel Hungerford (150 + km Approx)

We travel through  private property heading south towards the NSW border to the historic Royal Mail Hotel Hungerford where we stop for a refreshment and a bite to eat. After lunch we explore amazing scenery, artesian bores, natural caves, and Aboriginal heritage as we journey the desert landscape.

Hungerford to “Alroy Station” via Yowah Opal Fields (240km Approx)

We traverse through prime opal country and the hidden town of Yowah. Maybe you’d like to try your hand at finding a ‘Yowah Nut’ or Ironstone Matrix? Experience this amazing scenery, artesian bores, natural caves, and Aboriginal heritage as we journey the desert landscape. We will stay at Alroy Station, which is a working sheep and cattle property. The campgrounds are on the banks of Yowah Creek & offer a real outback camping experience.

“Alroy Station” to Toompine Pub (250km Approx)

Today we continue through unchartered territory on private station roads and tracks to the Toompine Pub – the pub with no town! Throw in a yabbie pot or two or wet a line along the way. The goal will be to catch a few blue claw or local yellow belly to cook on the campfire. Listen to the tales the walls of the Toompine pub whisper, with 120 years + of stories of bygone eras of the Cobb & Co and opal mining heritage.

Toompine Pub to Thargomindah (140km Approx)

The final stretch back to base! We will travel local station roads to Thargomindah where we reflect and yarn about the awesome week that was. The first round of coldies is on us, you will have deserved it! You can expect to see a photo reel and laugh about the antics and blunders along the way. Motorbikes, dirt, dust, camping, great food, great company, great countryside with plenty of laughs!
Don’t just tick it off your bucket list, SEND IT! Be assured that the itinerary is jam-packed with adventure, experiences, and local knowledge. In its truest sense, you will be traveling off the beaten track, as only pioneers, landowners and DGT have ventured.

Geoff Pike

Desert Gateway will definitely deliver on their promise of creating an adventure tour that is one hell of a ride.

Rob Warner

It’s awesome that the Embos are bringing tourism to the outback and sharing what this amazing countryside has to offer. Get amongst it!

Justin Kummerow

I’ve always loved riding with Embo! Can’t wait to get off the beaten track again with Desert Gateway Tours.

Michael Harland

I've done a lot of riding and camping but not across the desert. It's going to be the adrenaline rush I've been waiting for!

Pants Renfrey

Mate, we have had some awesome rides together on the Sunny and Fraser Coats. Always full of adventure and fun! What an awesome opportunity you have created to allow others to experience this region. Go well!

Duncan Isatt (Scottland)

After being in Oz working for a few months I took the chance on heading to the outback. It DID NOT DISSAPOINT! Everything from single track trails to rocky hilltops with more challenging paths to cross. I enjoyed the peace of farm life at the homesteads, swims in the creek campsite with a cold beer, and enjoyed the curious kangaroos. Loved meeting the legendary Outback Mac, a retired desert racer, who showed us around his amazing property. The experience was absolute class, cool riding, solid bikes, great camping and class craic all the way!
